Chapter 19

They were gathered just outside the court when Downsy’s mobile rang. It vibrated at first and then began to ring gradually increasing in volume until people were staring at him. Then it dawned on him it was his phone. He opened it up and quickly answered it. Of course it was his Uncle Ray who insisted that he speak with his son. Downsy elbowed his cousin and tried to hand him the phone. Frank at first refused but eventually when the phone was shoved in his face by Downsy who also used his other hand to wave a fist in his face at the same time, he accepted the call. The conversation wasn’t long but when it was over there were tears inching their way down the side of Frank’s face.

“So much for my tough guy image huh,” Frank whispered to his cousin. “The silly old bugger wished me all the best and said that he had always believed in me.” Frank wiped any signs of tears from his face and they walked into the court.

They had spoken with the barrister again that morning and she was very confident. Somehow it wasn’t contagious and the two men, one in particular, were quite worried. The charges of consorting with criminals and drug trafficking were very severe and a gaol term was quite likely. However the barrister said that it was up to the prosecutor to produce evidence and, as far as she was aware, there was none for either charge.

After the usual rigmarole of people standing as the judge swept into the courtroom and the obligatory statements regarding the rules and procedures of the court, the game was underway. For Downsy saw it as some kind of chess game. Powerful people in different positions across the court would move to different places both physically and linguistically. The two set pieces were really only the judge and Frank. Frank was in the dock and immobile. His face was set and he focused not on the judge but on the centrepiece above the judge’s head which symbolised the need for law but also for justice. Frank wondered whether justice would be done today.

The judge, who was the same one who had been at the pre-trial hearing, noted the change in defence barrister and inwardly smiled. He had no time for the show-boaters who sought notoriety rather than the best interests of their clients. Rarely did these attain a position on the bench and, in footy parlance, he as a coach would have benched them until they amended their ways. However he said nothing except to note that a change had occurred and ask Frank if he was happy with the change. This broke Frank’s concentration and he merely answered that he was, in fact more than happy. Whether it was his failure to address the judge in a proper formal manner or some of the people in the court knew of his previous barrister, was immaterial because the laughter was quickly silenced
